Whats the name all about?
Makomako (Arsitotelia serrata) is a tree endemic to New Zealand.
Sometimes called Wineberry, makomako grows to approximately 9m tall and has a gorgeous open architecture. The edge of leaves look spiky but are actually quite soft.
Makomako is a pioneer species. This means it grows in disturbed areas helping to lay the foundation for the forest to rebuild. We really relate to this.
Makomako blushes. Turn over a leaf to see its shyer, pink underside.
Makomako is an important rongoa herb. Maori boiled the leaves as an application for burns and infected wounds. Leaves were steeped in hot baths for arthritis and rheumatism. The berries serve as food and can be squeezed to make a thick sweet drink or wine!
