    Kiwi Advocacy Toolkit

    Who: Zoological Association of Australasia
    Where: NZ Wide
    Duration: 18 months

The Client’s Challenge: The ZAA wanted a toolkit of resources which advocated for kiwi in Aotearoa and enabled behaviour change and the consolidation of disparate messages.

Our Impact: Our amazing education team designed and facilitated a community workshop which started a conversation about what resources were needed to engage the public with kiwi conservation. We worked with the ZAA, DOC, Save the Kiwi and Tane Karepa (Tainui) to align messaging and include te ao Māori perspectives. The product of the collaborate process was the website and toolkit ‘Kete Kiwi’ which enables community groups, iwi, wildlife parks and kiwi education providers to deliver education messages in various forms such as signs, posters, handouts and flyers.

    Online Training Programme Development

    Who: Hibiscus Coast Zero Waste
    Where: Auckland
    Duration: 12 Months

The Client’s Challenge: Hibiscus Coast Zero Waste wanted to take their Zero Waste, Zero Carbon education programme to a wider audience. The content of their programme was complex and practical, so they needed clear instructions and materials that could be easily followed, without the support of a facilitator.

Our Impact: We worked with director Betsy Kettle and specialist videographer Nick Monks to develop an online training programme consisting of videos and PDF guides.

Having previously worked for HCZW we were familiar with their materials and delivery style. We co-designed the website and created all the supporting materials that are part of the site. The final site: https://zerowastezerocarbon.org.nz was well received by stakeholders and schools.

    Who: School-gen: Genesis Energy
    Where: NZ Wide
    Duration: 10 years, ongoing

The Client’s Challenge: School-gen is the school programme of Genesis Energy. We have supported School-gen staff over the last ten years to create up-to-date teaching resources for Years 1-8 for teaching about energy and sustainability topics. School-gen recently wanted to re-vamp their materials with more emphasis on the energy sector and sustainability.

Our Impact: We talked to School-gen staff about their needs and couched a proposal for a refreshed group of resources for teachers. We designed new resources, including slideshows, lesson plans and posters, about energy, electricity, climate change and sustainability.

These are featured on the website: https://www.schoolgen.co.nz L 1-4 resources have been written by Makomako Ltd.

    NZ Curriculum Linking

    Who: Tauranga City Council
    Where: Tauranga
    Duration: 18 months

The Client’s Challenge: The Waste and Water engagement teams at Tauranga City Council wanted to refresh their outdated Waterline and Waste programmes, and link them to the current NZ curriculum. They wanted guidance to collaborate to develop more hands-on activities during their school visits, along with refreshed materials and slideshows.

Our Impact: We worked with staff to identify their needs and develop in-depth plans for schools visits, supported by educator guides, teacher resources and student booklets.

The result were a variety of revamped, engaging programmes, tailored to Tauranga Schools and their contexts: https://www.tauranga.govt.nz/services/water/water-education/primary-education-programme

    Parks Operations Trainer Guides

Who: Porirua City Council Parks Department
    Where: Porirua
    Duration: 6 Months

The Client’s Challenge: Porirua City has an internal works team. They have embarked on a detailed health and safety programme to ensure staff are safe. Fundamental to this is ensuring various tasks are taught and completed according to best practice.

Our Impact: We have created trainer guides for various open space management work tasks to guide the trainer through all of the necessary teaching points.

Woven into the guides are adult learning principles to ensure that trainees have the best chance of assimilating the knowledge and practices they are being taught. These guides follow a step-wise process and will eventually be loaded into a phone app.
